The Boys

We finally settled on some names after trying out a long list, and watching them for a while. The inquisitive one, who is always out and seems to be more dominant, is named Sherlock and his brother is Moriarty (Morris for short). They still seem very happy together but I'm keeping a close eye on them, I know the chances of fighting between any pair, let alone a chinese pair!

No more pictures yet, I'm leaving them alone when they are in their cage to minimise stress levels, but here is a picture of my daffodils to keep you entertained XD

Poor babies :(

Last night I rescued 2 male chinese hamsters. They arrived at my door in a shoe box with clingfilm over the top, unnamed and unloved. The shavings lining the bottom of the shoe box were filthy, and there was hardly any food in their bowl, which was also filthy. They are tame, which shows something I guess, but very timid. The woman ask me some ridiculous questions, such as "are you going to breed them?" when I told her about Pea. I rescued them because they lived like this:

And arrived in this:

Both of them, in that cage. To be perfectly honest I felt a little sick when they arrived. In my opinion it was bordering on animal abuse. I took them and immediately took the climgfilm off, she took the money and left and I put them in their new cage which is huge compared to what they were in. She was praising the cage they used to be in, saying how fantastic it was, then I showed her what they were going into and she shut right up.

Anyway, they are nameless so suggestions welcome, I'm formulating a list so I  an try them all out. Here they are, two beautiful little boys:

The cage looks mucky because I had to put a little of their shavings in there to make them feel at home, and help prevent fighting. It is unusual for chinese hamsters to live together in harmony, so we will see how things go. At this moment in time they are snuggled together sleeping so fingers crossed it continues as this is stressful time they are going through.

Cuteness Overload

First off, an apology. I haven't been posting as much as I would like recently as I'm in the last term of my last year at University :o. The work is getting piled on top of me and I can't afford as much time on the computer as I would like. Unfortunately my uni work and pets come before me time so I have to cut back on blogging :(. This doesn't mean I won't be around, it just means I will be around a little less for a while.

In other news, my mini Munchkin arrived in the post today...

How amazing is he?! Done by the wonderfully talented Erin over at Danni the Kat and a mini replica of Munchkin! I love it, go check out her stuff, she even does custom orders like Munchkin there.

All the animals are doing great, and there may be a new arrival on the horizon...keep a look out ;)

Bye for now

A Big Thank You

This blog reached 1000 page views today, and I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who reads my posts, whether intentionally or stumbling upon it! Without you guys I wouldn't have bothered to carry on writing, and I wouldn't have had as much fun. So it is with a big smile on my face I bid you all goodnight, and thank you again.

The Rare Broccoli Tree

This is my entry for March's rodent recipe, part of the Rodent Recipe Challenge over at Inky's blog. The ingredient this month is Broccoli!

Today in my kitchen I created an exact replica of the illusive broccoli tree! Using two simple foods, you can do it too :o

Step 1: Cut a small floret of broccoli
Step 2: Place a small amount of peanut butter on a plate
Step 3: Place the broccoli floret in the middle of the peanut butter, making sure it is upright

Step 4: Feed this delicious, mythical treat to your rodent!

Pea dug right in as soon as she saw it :D

What a sad society we live in.

I just found this beautiful little girl
on Gumtree. The owner is giving her away because her daughter now wants a rabbit. Yes that is orange in her tiny tiny cage. As most people know you cannot give hamsters citrus in any form. I am in the process of trying to rehome her with me as the cage she is in is tiny, and she is beautiful and deserves much better.

What a sad society this is to think of hamsters as throwaway pets. It makes me so angry to see things like this. I just thought I would share this as it has upset and angered me, to see her tiny face and think she is unwanted.

Wish me luck.

Taming your hamster

Once you get your hamster home, leave it to settle in for a day or two to make sure it isn't too freaked out when you start taming. After that, you can start taming.

You will need: Hamster ball/toilet tube
                    Treats
A bath, large playpen or plastic box
                  And of course your hamster!
Now you can begin:
  1. Sit by the cage and talk to your hamster for a couple of days to get it used to your voice.
  2. Sit with your hand in the cage for half an hour a day, still talking to your hamster.
  3. Sit with a treat in your hand in the cage and see if they take it.
  4. Get to a stage where your hamster is sitting either on your hand to eat or eating from it.
  5. Take your hamster out of its cage with either a running ball, a toilet roll tube, or something similar and sit in an empty bath with it, allowing it to run all over you. (If you don't have a bath, then use a large playpen you can sit in, or a large plastic box with nothing in so they cannot get distracted).
  6. Allow your hamster to come to you in its own time.
  7. After a while of doing this, you will know when they are ready, you can attempt to pick your hamster up. Once they allow you to do that then it is easy!

Over time they will become more and more tame the more cuddles you give them. Munchkin, my syrian gets up to an hour cuddle time a night and he is incredibly tame, although a little jumpy, and some hams are just like that. You will find out your hams disposition in no time :D.

Small Furry Pets!

I just recieved my first copy of Small Furry Pets magazine and I am THRILLED with it. I've subscribed to 12 months, which is 4 magazines. It cost me £14 inc. delivery and that works out at £3.50 a magazine (took me far too long to work that out ><). As far as I know it is a UK only magazine :( but to anyone from the UK interested in small animals as pets I would recommend this! I honestly love it, so much information on such a variety of animals makes me stupidly excited.

So yeah, check it out, let me know what you think if you decide to subscribe, and most of all enjoy!

Munchkin also approved, and gave it his paw of approval

Animal Tails Givaway!

Hannah over at Animal Tails is doing a really cute givaway! The prize is a lovely magnet with a picture of her hamster Lolly on. It ends on the 17th March so get going right here if you want to have a chance of winning :D

In unrelated news, the mice had a name change because I didn't like their original name, so they are now known as Kayle and Morgana :D

Diabetes

I'm going to take a break in my scheduled posts to update everyone on my animals. Sadly, Little Man has diabetes, confirmed today. I'm a bit of a mess because my usual cuddle monster is now the world's worst biter and I'm so sad about it. I will be changing his diet to reflect his illness, and giving him more ball time to make him excersise but cuddle time will be a no no until his behaviour improves, I like my fingers in tact...

 Cuddling in his better days

The rest of the animals are doing well, the mice are becoming tame, and lovely little creatures. Munchkin is fine, Pea is doing great in the zoozone since I changed her from the Imac Fantasy and Winter is a bundle of fun as usual. Sorry this post is so short, I'm one sad Onion today :(

The Versatile Blogger Award

Inky kindly gave me this award in her blog Inky the hamster Mommy, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside! I've never recieved an award XD. I also recieved it from Squeeze at Fluffy Toughie.

I would like to thank my hamsters, and of course the mice in helping me achieve this award. Then there is my ever understanding partner, who suffers a house full of rodents to keep me happy ;).

  •  In the same post, share 7 completely random pieces of information about yourself.
  •  In the same post, include this set of rules.
  •  Inform each nominated blogger of their nomination by posting a comment on each of their blogs.

Apparently I have to now list 7 random things about myself...hmm...

  • I love purple
  • Spiders terrify me
  • I can't wait to finish university

I will make a confession now, I'm so new to the blogging community I don't even know 15 blogs yet D: but I will try my best:

And breathe! Ok so thats everyone, I don't know 15 yet, embarrassing as that is. But anyway, thank you again Inky, and congrats to the nominees!
